The oil industry is one of the world’s most developed and innovation-oriented sectors, with new methods and technologies constantly developing. In this respect, meetings between scientists, designers and engineers from advanced oil producing countries are critical for an exchange of expertise and development of new ideas. Atyrau Oil, Gas & Infrastructure 2010 Exhibition became a meeting place for over 2,400 oil and gas industry professionals of Kazakhstan and the entire Caspian Region. The conference featured presentations of the latest developments and technologies as well as discussions of topical issues.
The high status of the events was confirmed by participation of the following persons in the exhibition and conference opening ceremony: Bolat Daukenov, Atyrau Oblast First Deputy Akim; David Moran, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan; Nurlan Sauranbayev, Managing Director, KazMunaiGas National Company JSC; Uzakbai Karabalin, General Director, Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas, and other officials.
Opening the exhibition, Bolat Daukenov, Atyrau Oblast First Deputy Akim, specifically pointed out the fact that the exhibition in Atyrau has become recognisable and gains increasing popularity with every coming year. This year it has acquired a special status in the context of establishment of the Customs Unions of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus as commodity manufacturers are getting ready to work under more favourable conditions. Mr Daukenov also drew the exhibitors’ attention to the fact that Kazakhstan boasts special conditions, which can be even described as unprecedented, created for those companies that are going to invest in the non-raw-material sectors of economy. He urged potential investors to take a closer look at the Atyrau Oblast where there is a vast field of activity in store for them.
The exhibition featured about 100 companies from 10 countries: China, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Besides oil and gas companies, the exhibition brings together companies that offer services in the oil and gas industry, oil and gas equipment, special clothing, environmental protection technology, and companies engaged in construction and infrastructure. In addition to the major oil and gas companies KazMunaiGas Exploration & Production JSC, TengizChevroil and North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC), the exhibition was attended by domestic oil and gas equipment manufacturers and service providers such as AtyrauNefteMash LLP, KazPromPribor LLP, KazTurboRemont Service Centre LLP, Prikaspiiskiy Mashinostroitelny Kompleks LLP, and EnergoCenter Asia LLP.
The exhibition became the first public venue to present the unique petrophysical laboratory established by the affiliate of KazMunaiGas National Company JSC – Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas. The laboratory’s state-of-the-art equipment will enable the region's mineral developers to efficiently carry out high-quality research of core samples by local specialists which used to be performed abroad. The conference also saw new developments presented by NefteGas SOCAR Scientific Research Institute, which developed new composite compounds with a demulsifying effect to destroy stable oil emulsions specifically for Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan oil fields.
More than 150 delegates of OilTech Atyrau Technology Conference held alongside the exhibition discussed issues of strategic development of Kazakhstan’s exploration and production sector, water resources and waste water management, engineering and geological research concept, and much more. Some of the subjects directly touched on the problems of the Caspian Region: Development of the Oil Refining Industry in Kazakhstan. A Case Study: Atyrau Refinery; Petrochemical Products and Marketing Them in Western Kazakhstan. Special interest was generated by the report of Pierre Delpont, External Relations Director, NCOC. As of today, NCOC’s agent company – AgipKCO – has by 70 percent completed the construction of a gas processing plant at Western Yesken, 28 kilometres north-east of Atyrau, and raised a number of most important oil production facilities in the offshore part of the project. Alternative oil export options and an oil refinery construction concept (Second Stage under the Kapitansky Project) are being elaborated. In his report, Mr Delpont noted that as early as 2013 NCOC is planning to produce 10 million tons of oil, and in 2016 the production level is expected to reach 16 million tons. “Wait just a decade to see 10 percent of oil in the European market to be delivered from the Kashagan Field,” he concluded.
Development of the oil and gas industry will continue to have a positive effect on the development pace of the non-raw-material sectors of Kazakhstan’s economy. Sauat Mynbayev, Minister of Oil and Gas of Kazakhstan, in his welcome-letter to the event’s participants noted: “Over the past decade, Kazakhstan has increased oil production twice as much. New routes to transport raw hydrocarbons to the world markets are created. The growth of production facilities and expansion of transport infrastructure promote consolidation of cooperation between Kazakhstan and foreign representatives of oil and gas industry. The significance of the West Kazakhstan Region and Kazakhstan’s oil capital, the city of Atyrau, in the country’s political and economic life can hardly be overestimated. The increasingly growing interest in the Atyrau-hosted oil and gas events is yet another testimony thereto.”
